"The penny magazine of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge" published by Charles Knight is an illustrated weekly magazine published from 1832 to 1845. Created for Britain's working class and sold for just one penny, it featured wood-engraved illustrations and articles promoting rational inquiry and self-education. Initially reaching 200,000 copies weekly, the magazine struggled to balance affordability with production costs, particularly for its popular illustrations. Its serious, educational tone ultimately
proved less appealing to working-class readers than competitors offering lighter entertainment. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
