"The Romance of Biography (Vol 2 of 2)" by Mrs. Jameson is a collection of biographical anecdotes written in the mid-19th century. The work focuses on the relationships between women and celebrated poets, examining how female beauty and virtue have influenced the lives and writings of male literary figures throughout history. It serves as both a tribute to these women and a critique of the poetic representations of love and beauty. The
opening of the book introduces the theme of poetic love, beginning with the poet Carew and his muse, Celia, while delving into the influence that women held over men of genius from the days of the Troubadours. It discusses how the lyrical expression of love evolved through various styles and conventions, transforming from an honorable homage to women into a fashionably playful and often shallow expression, markedly influenced by changing cultural tastes over centuries. The text sets the stage for a deeper exploration of individual poets and their muses, highlighting the blend of admiration and disillusionment in these romantic relationships.
