The story revolves around complex themes of love, betrayal, and social justice, featuring characters such as the tragic couple 譚楚玉 and 劉藐姑, who, after suffering grave injustices, meet a dire fate, prompting a series of events that involve confrontations with the oppressive wealth and authority symbolized by the character 錢萬貫. The opening of the novel
depicts a dramatic scene where 譚楚玉 and 劉藐姑, driven to despair by their circumstances, take their own lives, leading to public outrage against their oppressor, 錢萬貫.
