海上花列傳 by Bangqing Han

"海上花列傳" by Bangqing Han is a novel published in 1892 that chronicles the lives of prostitutes in late 19th-century Shanghai. As the first Chinese novel to be serially published, it distinguished itself by writing all dialogue in Wu Chinese dialect rather than standard Mandarin. The work offers a deliberately understated portrayal of courtesan life, eschewing sensationalism for matter-of-fact description. Despite critical acclaim from major literary figures, its authentic dialectal rendering made it
challenging for broader audiences, contributing to limited commercial success. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
