"陶庵夢憶" by Dai Zhang is a collection of autobiographical essays written around 1665. After the fall of the Ming dynasty left him impoverished, scholar Zhang Dai retreated to the mountains and penned these nostalgic recollections of his earlier privileged life. The 124 short essays capture vanished scenes—drinking parties at West Lake, snowy solitudes, theater performances, and courtesans—blending wisdom and irony as Zhang reflects on a lost world of refined pleasure he now
views as merely a dream. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
