"Free from School" by Rahul Alvares is a memoir written in the early 21st century, capturing the unconventional educational journey of a young boy in India. The book chronicles the author’s decision to step away from the traditional schooling system following his SSC examination at the age of 16. Instead of conforming to societal expectations, he embarks on a year-long adventure, exploring his interests in nature, particularly reptiles, and gaining hands-on experiences
that expand his knowledge beyond textbooks. The opening of the memoir introduces the author's initial experiences following his decision to leave school. He starts by helping at a fish aquarium shop, learning about fish and aquariums through practical involvement and mentorship from Ashok, the shop's owner. Alvares describes his naivety and initial struggles, highlighting the life skills he acquires—like handling money and managing time—while fostering a growing passion for aquatic life. The narrative sets the stage for a transformative year, emphasizing the importance of experiential learning over a conventional academic path. (This is an automatically generated summary.)
