About this eBook

Author Jones, John D.
LoC No. 04029547
Title Life and Adventure in the South Pacific
Note Preface says "Two young men, led to engage in the whale-fisheries, and spending five years in the employment, have compiled from their log-books and their recollection a plain, unvarnished narrative of this period." Second author may be Jackson Holmes Chase.
Note Published as by "A Roving Printer". Variously attributed by different library catalogs to John D. Jones, John B. Jones, John Jones, Ira Jones, and simply "Jones". The source of the attributions to someone named Jones is unknown. The crew list for the voyage does not list anyone named Jones: https://whalinghistory.org/?s=AC044041
Note Actual identity of author may be Joseph Howe, 1834-1888 ("Joe Hour" in the crew list).
Note Chapter XXVII, the legend of Kinau and Tuanoa, appears to be only slightly modified from the story as told in "The Natural History of the Sperm Whale" by Thomas Beale, published over twenty years earlier.
