Den fria viljan är ett absurt antagande, något oavhängigt opererande på egen hand i en abstrakt tankerymd. Den stora formskapande fantasien är en oförlöst ande, om den icke får urladda sig i måleriet. Fåfängans sista och högsta raffinemang är undergången av all fåfänga, som en kvinna säkrast leker med en man den hon icke behöver. Fördomsfrihet är säkerhet i tingens hantering. Det ligger något oaptitligt i att bära hand på sitt eget liv. Den gode bör förstå neutralisera sina skadliga verkningar genom stränghet. Det hör till det vanligaste i denna de oklara begreppens värld, att inom sig bekämpa, vad man icke bär inom sig. De onda äro oftast kraftiga organismer som känna sig hämmade i sitt temperaments flöde. Att de onda lida mest är icke sant, deras lidande är icke djupt, det är en för dem på sätt och vis angenäm vana. En hög intelligensgrad förlänar ansiktet något rikt och moget, det är som om andens fetma stege i ansiktet, Minervas fetma. Nu hänga sig vardagsmänniskorna patriotismens bjällra kring halsen, som vore den deras. Gösta Berling kan stå sig till och med inför en mycket bortskämd läsare, som ur sitt eget inre giver honom den utsöktaste kryddan; då skapas en kentaur. Den stora framgångens människor äro realister och fatalister. Människoförbättrarens uppgift är icke att predika moral, men att förändra människans inre genom att omgestalta de yttre betingelserna för mänsklighetens moraliska hälsa. Moralen har börjat där, var hon skulle sluta, d.v.s. med att giva den efter förfullkomning längtande en ledtråd. Hittills har allting skett för enskilda, religionerna ha i djupare mening endast kommit till enskilda, nu kan man skönja den tid då massan skall bearbetas. De små människorna äro rätt sinnliga på sitt sätt, på ett förnöjsamt sätt som ett stort temperament icke kan uthärda. Missförståndet har hittills varit den största makt på jorden. Den mest genialiska är den mest medgörliga och den mest omedgörliga. Alla långa sanningsrötter äro misstänkliga, sanningen får man endast ut i korta brutna bitar. Vår svaghet då vi försvara eller angripa ligger alltid i fruktan att misslyckas, som tvingar oss att forcera, då det är tillräckligt att med vårdslös hand kasta in förintande misstankar. Från sin innersta ärkevidskepelse avstår man aldrig, det vore ens undergång. Man har icke karaktär nog att offentligt förbjuda den mänskliga andens högsta yttringar, omvägar äro lärda, journalister o.s.v. som oskadliggöra allt. Vi se först det grövsta i sanningen, nämligen sanningen själv, det viktigaste — den talande se vi betydligt senare. Att livet omger oss och vi icke ha tid för det, skärper dess tjusning på ett raffinerat sätt, som himmelen hos de religiösa höjer jordens tjuskraft. Livets tomhet, som för nutidsmänniskorna ter sig som klosteraktighet, har framkallat en hysterisk nöjeslystnad, köttet som tror sig undertryckt tar ut sin rätt. Det kunde roa en Mefistofeles att föra denna huvudlösa jäktande massa ut på hal is — att en gång räcka den njutningens fulla bägare. Om genialiska människor med puritanska skygglappar råka se sanningen, bliva de otroligt uppfinningsrika i att bortförklara den. En icke religiös natur sympatiserar alltid litet med Mefistofeles visavi änglasången. Religionen kan genom missuppfattning bliva en källa av okultur, då de religiösa göra sig döva för världslig konst och vetenskap och undandraga sig de genialiska inflytanden, de äro i behov av. Det är så sällsamt med aforismens konst: leken med kontrasten är futtig som en ordlek, sanningarna oftast anspråkslösa och dock är detta sanningens över allting kostbara dräkt som väves. Säga att man älskar människorna är hysteri, säga att man icke älskar dem svaghet — hava makten att göra dem till det de skola bli är allenast det rätta. Den som själv ännu icke är mild, längtar starkare efter mildhetens seger, som efter en sak vars seger han är oviss om och som har många fiender i honom själv. De små äro naiva och bokstavliga i sina dygder, kanske emedan de äro så nya för dem. En tänkare av större genialitet än hittills funnits skulle behöva färre ord än filosoferna hittills använt. Man kommer i framtiden att göra ett tyngre och kvantitativt mindre arbete. Proletariatets slösaktighet är klenvuxen livskraft. Proletariatet är en växtatom vilken jorden frågar: vartill suger du ännu ut mig. Jorden älskar plantor som suga med djupa rötter. En sak hava vi alltid framför andra — oss själva. Ingen rår för sin stjärna, man är _tvungen_ att följa den. Den motpart, man får i sitt äktenskap, har man alltid varit värd. Vill man hava människorna till något högt, är det mindre farligt att något överskatta, än att underskatta dem. Sömngångaren går till lotteriet för att draga den stora lotten. Då det egna intellektet stigit högt, förefaller en varje intellekt aktningsvärt, likgiltigt om en människas eller en insekts, man får ögonen öppna för det dämoniska i intellektets väsen över huvud. Det ful-fula träder emot en då något högt blir smutskastat. Av en dylik anledning trädde det en gång emot mig i drömmen, jag såg elaka käringar skrattande dränka små barn i ämbaren, jag såg avrättningar överallt på stränder och backar, människohänder och trädgrenar besudlade med blod och hjärnsubstans, allt så rått och fult som det icke kan finnas i verkligheten, men i den förstorande spegeln av en förnärmad vidunderlig sensibilitet. Lindrig sömnlöshet ökar genialiteten. Den medvetna dygden, dygden att tala om, börjar först med intellektets utbildning, tidigare är allt animalisk tillfällighet. Tänkarna foga de stora stenarna i tankens byggnad, amatörerna murbruket som kan undvaras i en endast tänkt byggnad. De verkligt deklasserade och utstötta bland människor äro endast de som begått en låg handling. En verklig konstkritiker vore en person i stånd att fatta de olika konstarternas, konstkaraktärernas inre lagenlighet. Det högsta för oss synliga ligger på andra sidan om ont och gott, fult och skönt, där blir det högsta människoanden skapat litet, trångt och alltför mänskligt, där tala tingen, framtidens konst blir kosmisk. Nietzsches styrka är icke att söka i styrkan av hans röst, utan i den höghet som strömmar från hans största upplevelse — den eviga återkomsten. Bör icke varje mycket stor människa utom allt det andra ha ett eget stort öde, en särskild brännpunkt i livet? Recensenten är oftast en person, som talar så länge om en bok, tills ingen mera vet vad den är värd. Om kritiken skall uppfylla sitt ändamål, bör kritikern uttryckligen, så att intet rum för tvivel lämnas, säga ut vad en bok är. Böcker behöva sitt varumärke likaväl som andra varor. Skuldkänsla är alltid ett säkert tecken till karaktärssvaghet, den faktiska skulden förblir frågetecken. De flesta gå under emedan de gå efter något glänsande och försumma det nödvändiga. Vi likna alla skator och gäddor, vi gripa efter det som glänser — i vår egen håg. Då anden är undertryckt, stönar köttet. Det är nödvändigt att lära sig packa sin intellektuella ränsel för att se hur elegant, välordnad och lätt att bära ens packning är. Kvinnans största förtjänst är, att hon hittills icke mycket försyndat sig intellektuellt. Faran och osäkerheten är sorglöshetens rätta element, det civiliserade livet är tungt att bära. Det kommer en stund då man säger till sig själv: mina tankar tillhöra icke längre mig, då viger man allt sitt liv åt andra. Det finnes människor, till vilka allting kommer, och andra som ha företrädesrätten att själva gå till allting. Livets tre stora gåvor: fattigdom, ensamhet, lidande skattar endast den vise till deras egentliga höga värde. Finnes det något mera hänförande än Napoleons fräcka gudomliga äventyrarnuna? En verklig man behöver intet namn, han kommer, ser och segrar. Vad vi nu behöva, är den fräckaste människan, den som en gång bar namnet Napoleon. Den som icke är handlingsmänniska säger att massorna lukta illa, men Napoleon har ingen näsa och vågorna bära honom. Var gång en trång känsla kommer över en skall man förvandla den till en vid. Där skönheten saknas taga alla gracer varann i hand och fly. Då träder i stället för kärlek rättfärdighet, och plikt i stället för kunglig böjelse. Den som har makten över hjärtan bör handskas med dem som med något heligt. Den stora medfödda yttre chicen, som är lika sällsynt som den stora fysiska skönheten, åtföljes av en inre stilighet, en utsökthet i varje handling och åtbörd! Dessa människor känna sig som härskare och erkännas även av andra som sådana. En mänsklighet så ren som blommor är framtidens ideal. Dikter om kosmos kunna endast vara viskningar. Det är icke nödvändigt att bedja, man blickar på stjärnorna och har känslan av att vilja sjunka till marken i ordlös tillbedjan. Man frågar icke om Gud finnes eller icke finnes, man lägger helt enkelt sitt lilla förstånd åsido.
