Interlanguage links

Hi again Marcello. I wonder if you could please add a link to the Portugue main page in the sidebar. Something like

or anything you can think off. I always have to go to the English Main Page and then click the interlanguage link... Ricdiogo 10:15, 4 December 2006 (EST)

I'm not so happy about this one. Everybody is going to see that. Why don't you simply bookmark the page in your browser? highlander 07:02, 8 December 2006 (EST)
I've already done that. That's not the point. What I'm trying to do with this is creating a multilingual PG not only in etexts also in the website itself. My idea was to increase the website's navigability for Port.-speaking users. Hopefully I'd like to see "Main Page DE ES FR PT..." in the future -- viewable from every page, so every user could refer to it more easily, according to their native languages. Don't know your opinion on that though. Ricdiogo 10:21, 8 December 2006 (EST)

eaudio link

Is it possible to create an eaudio link in addition to the ebook link?
It should show the loudspeaker icon. This would greatly improve the Bookshelf pages.
Robert Marquardt 04:05, 8 December 2006 (EST)

Like this?
highlander 07:00, 8 December 2006 (EST)

Yep. Now i can add the SF audios. Robert Marquardt 08:53, 8 December 2006 (EST)

Now the next idea: More templates. One for books with HTML version and one HTML version with illustrations. The only difference to Ebook would be a different icon. Maybe just use several icons. Robert Marquardt 08:17, 28 December 2006 (EST)

Bookshelves link on Main Page

I think it should read "Bookshelf" to avoid confusion. Robert Marquardt 11:30, 8 December 2006 (EST)

Maybe it should :-) It does now. highlander 11:44, 8 December 2006 (EST)

You must have missed an occurence. The Main Page still reads "Bookshelves". Robert Marquardt 13:54, 8 December 2006 (EST)

The wiki does some page caching, it will expire eventually. highlander 14:30, 8 December 2006 (EST)

.png files

Namely the stars are not rendered transparent by my IE 6. I use Mozilla so i did see it only today when i checked the xmas decoration i added. Best convert the images to .gif which is supported well by all browsers. GIF is now patent free. Robert Marquardt 13:07, 16 December 2006 (EST)

IE <= 6 does not support png transparency. All other browsers do. But M$ is updating all IE 6 users to IE 7 anyway. This "bug" will take care of itself in a short time. OTOH gif does not support alpha transparency, just 1 bit masking, so you cannot do shadows or anti-aliased borders with gif, and most open source artwork libraries use png format for exactly these reasons.
If this bothers you, use the pngs against a white background or upload your own gifs. But don't substitute the existing png images with a lesser capable format because one commercial browser vendor wants you to do so. Marcello 13:47, 16 December 2006 (EST)

I do think that IE 6 will be in widespread use for quite some time. No sane modem user activates automatic update.

No sane person would use IE in the first place. This leaves you with people who don't care who "0wns" their computers, both in terms of corporate ownership and hax0r 0wnership.
The ratio of IE7 / IE* hits is 0.15 on Dec 1 and 0.25 on Dec 16. 25% of all IE users have already been updated, 10% in the last 2 weeks. I'd advise you not to waste time on IE6 boo-boos any more. Marcello 13:42, 17 December 2006 (EST)

images on Bookshelf pages

I think about taking two images from Ullr Uprising stock_book_yellow-16.png resize them to 25% and add them to the SF bookshelf page. What is the policy for that? Robert Marquardt 08:04, 17 December 2006 (EST)

We are the policy makers. The only "hard" rule that comes to my mind is to only use artwork under GFDL license or better. This is because this wiki is under GFDL (same as wikipedia).
Also, consider using the "thumbnail" feature of the wiki instead of scaling down, and upload the images to the wiki because deep linking to images in the PG archive does not work. Marcello 13:47, 17 December 2006 (EST)

As you have written down, you are the Boss :-). Even if "It is easier to apologize afterwards than to get permission beforehand." i wanted to ask before uploading images. I do want the SF section to shine, but it is also important not to have the section stand out too much. The other sections need images also then. The license is why i want to take the images from the books. They have been cleared already. Robert Marquardt 01:18, 18 December 2006 (EST)

Changes to PG sidebar

Can you change the PG sidebar to the left? It could be a bit smaller so that the edit boxes seem centered. Also the texts "search book catalog" etc need to properly capitalized for captions, ie "Search Book Catalog". Robert Marquardt 01:23, 27 December 2006 (EST)

The boxes aren't centered because I need a little IE fuzz factor. IE has a buggy implementation of the CSS specs, furthermore IE5, IE55 and IE6 all have a different buggy implementation. To get the boxes exactly centered on conforming browsers and all IE browsers is nearly impossible. (Did I mention I'm on Linux and therefore cannot run IE7 on wine because IE7 works only on a registered version of Windows?)
The capitalization is done in the CSS and is what I took over from the mediawiki skin. Wikipedia does the same. If people don't like it, I can easily change it, though you are the first to notice. Marcello 13:54, 27 December 2006 (EST)

Good reasons not to change anything. My main reason for the question was to win some screen real estate for those who still use 800x600. Robert Marquardt 08:06, 28 December 2006 (EST)

Box / table

How can I add a box with some text below the cell phone pic in PT Principal?Ricdiogo 10:01, 1 January 2007 (EST)

Use this code right after the image:
 {{Box-floatright|Caption|Text}}
Marcello 13:14, 1 January 2007 (EST)

please change this on main page

"Our collection was produced by hundreds of volunteers." to "Our collection was produced by thousands of volunteers." Distributed Proofreaders alone has more than a few hundred members. Robert Marquardt 13:14, 7 January 2007 (EST)

Done. Marcello 15:04, 16 January 2007 (EST)

Please change all occurences of ebook and ebooks to eBook and eBooks. I will rework the other pages. This important word should be uniformly spelled. Robert Marquardt 14:29, 30 January 2007 (EST)

"eBook" should only be used where a capitalized word is expected, else "ebook". Marcello 14:38, 30 January 2007 (EST)

Then only the focus changes. I will check for eBook to be changed to ebook. :-) Robert Marquardt 14:50, 30 January 2007 (EST)

Subpages

Could you please enable subpages in the main namespace? Ricdiogo 19:41, 13 January 2007 (EST)

Done. Marcello 15:04, 16 January 2007 (EST)

Include pages

I've been testing pages inclusion. It works with {{Gutenberg:Orto Teste 1}} but not in the main namespace. Could you please enable that feature in the main namespace so I can include pages like {{PT Orto Teste 1}} into other pages? Ricdiogo 19:12, 29 January 2007 (EST)

I think you have to use special syntax like {{:Orto Teste}}. I'm on m way out now. Please consult the wiki "Editor's Help" pages. Marcello 01:59, 30 January 2007 (EST)

Please ban Superman

He is defacing the Talk Main Page. Robert Marquardt 10:28, 31 January 2007 (EST)

"WHITE ROB" seems to be the same one. Robert Marquardt 14:14, 31 January 2007 (EST)

He only wrote a mushy love letter on his user page. I think that is still in the gray zone. I gave you sysop rights so you too can kill them on sight. Marcello 14:31, 31 January 2007 (EST)

I have been taken hostage by PG! No way to flee! ;-)
"Superman" worked the same way. First posting such love letters and then starting to deface the pages. I will kill the mime on the first false move. :-> (see http://www.comics.com/creators/wizardofid/archive/wizardofid-20070121.html) Robert Marquardt 00:33, 1 February 2007 (EST)

DP 10,000 Celebration

Will the PG Main Page include something special for DP's 10K?

Can the light-bulb "You can help" that appears on catalog pages be changed for the celebration?

Here's a link to DP's forum discussion if you'd like more info.

--I also wrote about this on the Main Page's Talk-page pg:wiki/Talk:Main_Page

When should the new banner come up? For how long? Marcello 14:12, 7 March 2007 (EST)
I'm going to guess Thursday (PDT / DP server time), but the precise time is hard for me to say. If you could send me a DP message with your e-mail, I would be happy to e-mail you when the penny drops. Or, if you're in the continental U.S. and want me to phone you, I'd be happy to give you a call. Buku 15:03, 7 March 2007 (EST)

DP already showing "9,995 titles preserved for the world!" Robert Marquardt 02:59, 9 March 2007 (EST)

The e-books

The set of e-books released for DP's 10K celebration is:

Thank you

Thanks to Marcello for the page-top change to help celebrate.

Many thanks to white-washers David Widger & greentea! Their herculean efforts to upload 15 books at once allowed this to happen!

And, last but not least, thanks to everybody for contributing to DP's first 10,000 titles!

If you would like to join the party at DP, we're celebrating by trying to proof at least one page in every active project today. Here is the list of projects yet to be done. --Buku 13:22, 9 March 2007 (EST)

A Blue Bullet

Marcello, i need a small blue bullet or similar to mark the new Science Fiction which is not on the SF CD. Something similar to Favorite-icon-16x16.png, but less visible. Can you create something? Blue is just my favorite color. Robert Marquardt 11:04, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

Maybe this one? Blue-bullet-16x16.png Marcello 17:39, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

Close. I will use it. Better something which is not a star to have a better distinction. Robert Marquardt 04:17, 13 March 2007 (EDT)

Redirect

Marcello could you please create a www.gutenberg.org/pt page that may autoredirect to www.gutenberg.org/wiki/PT_Principal. Reason: to give the press and other people a shorter straight link to the Portuguese version.Ricdiogo 13:38, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

Done. Marcello 17:08, 12 March 2007 (EDT)
Thanks. Ricdiogo 19:31, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

Stats

Can we get further stats on individual pages (besides Popularpages)? I'd love to see more data on the daily visits to the PT main page. Ricdiogo 08:39, 20 March 2007 (EDT)

You can do a research about MediaWiki plugins. I don't know if the wiki keeps daily records of page hits. Marcello 14:28, 20 March 2007 (EDT)

SF CD on main page

Can you place an announcement with links to the SF Bookshelf page and the BitTorrent Tracker page on the main page? Something like the link to the Christmas Booshelf in December. I refrained from changing the main page because this is your area.
I will probably create a separate page for the SF CD, but that will take some time. Robert Marquardt 11:42, 21 March 2007 (EDT)

Thanks. just seen 3 leechers at once :-) Robert Marquardt 00:49, 22 March 2007 (EDT)

Ah, SF Bookshelf now #3 on the popular pages list (soon to be #2). It is definitely a good idea to promote a bookshelf on the main page. Lets create more CDs. Robert Marquardt 02:24, 30 March 2007 (EDT)

another PG email address requested

Andrew Sly has just forwarded me an email of someone requesting the addition of a book to a bookshelf. I already predicted that we will get such messages of someone who wants to contribute but does not want to get fully involved. How about creating bookshelf_AT_pglaf.org forwarding to me? The link can be placed on the bookshelf category page itself or at a separate page linked from there. Robert Marquardt 02:24, 30 March 2007 (EDT)

Greg Newby is the mail administrator at pglaf.org. Marcello 11:55, 30 March 2007 (EDT)

Upload filtering

.png is not allowed to upload. Can you fix that? Robert Marquardt 14:12, 25 May 2007 (EDT)

png upload already is enabled. It just doesn't work as expected. I'll try to fix it next week. Use gif or jpg as workaround. Marcello 15:16, 25 May 2007 (EDT)

Bookshelves

Hi Marcello, could you please add this to Category:Bookshelf (the page is locked):

What to do

What CAN be done on this wiki? It seems like there is no information for new users. Stuff like that would go in the Gutenburg namespace but it is locked. Arlen22 19:24, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
