The American Missionary Association was a Protestant-based abolitionist group founded on September 3, 1846. The main purpose of this organization was to eliminate slavery, to educate African-Americans, to promote racial equality, and to promote Christian values. Although it initially had the support of numerous Protestant groups, eventually it became most closely aligned with the Congregational Churches (now the United Church of Christ). It maintained its distinct identity until 1999, when a restructuring of the UCC merged it into the Justice and Witness Ministries division.

The organization started the American Missionary magazine, which published from 1846 through 1934.
