Interwiki Links

Use the pg interwiki prefix to link to the PG main web site. Example:

Human-Read Audio Books

yields: Human-Read Audio Books

Use the ebook interwiki prefix to link to bibrec pages. Example:

12345

yields: 12345

Use the author interwiki prefix to link to author. Example:

Oscar Wilde

yields: Oscar Wilde

This technique also gets rid of the "external link" icon.

Missing Pages page is out of date

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenberg:Wanted_Books is out of date. It might be an idea to suggest that volunteers also check the DP Wiki missing pages page at http://www.pgdp.net/wiki/Missing_pages as this is more likely to be up-to-date. As dphelp, I've just had to turn down a volunteer who offered to scan pages for us that someone else scanned months ago.

The page now refers people directly to the dp wiki. Marcello 04:25, 6 December 2006 (EST)

I want to add a new Bookshelf category

Science Fiction The problem is that i am a newbie and cannot find the way to do it. Filling in the content should be no problem. i can do a ripoff from the other categories. Robert Marquardt 01:49, 6 December 2006 (EST)

I created the page Science Fiction (Bookshelf) you'll have to fill it in. Marcello 04:08, 6 December 2006 (EST)

Done. Improvements will follow. Robert Marquardt 02:45, 7 December 2006 (EST)

You have 2 works listed under author James Buchanan as if they were one person, identified as the James Buchanan who served as US President. The theological work (Modern Atheism under its forms of Pantheism, Materialism, Secularism, Development, and Natural Laws, EText-No. 20233 ) was written by the James Buchanan who was a Scottish divine and professor at New College, Edinburgh. So you ought to create separate author listing for him. Feel free to delete this comment after that. I know of no other way to inform Gutenberg of this than this note. Wiki markup for author/book info

Is there a way to get Wiki markup for an author and his books and wikipedia entry (e.g. here: Vachel Lindsay), so one can cut and paste it from the author/booklist into a Bookshelf page? Or have anyone got a program which converts HTML source to Wiki markup? Hallvard Furuseth 12:54, 9 December 2006 (EST)

First i collect as many of such entries into a single text file. I then use the good old DOS editor Brief with some regular expressions for Search & Replace to do a bulk conversion.

<h2><a name="a234">Lindsay, Vachel, 1879-1931</a></h2>
<ul>
 <li class="pgdbxlink"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vachel_Lindsay">Wikipedia</a></li>
 <li class="pgdbetext"><a href="/etext/13029">The Art of the Moving Picture</a> (English)</li>
 <li class="pgdbetext"><a href="/etext/592">The Chinese Nightingale and Other Poems</a> (English)</li>
 <li class="pgdbetext"><a href="/etext/1021">The Congo and Other Poems</a> (English)</li>
 <li class="pgdbetext"><a href="/etext/424">General William Booth Enters into Heaven : and other poems</a> (English)</li>
</ul>
 <li class="pgdbxlink"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Vachel_Lindsay
">
Wikipedia
</a></li>

The above are the parts of the match expression. This can then be easily converted to the desired Wikipedia link. Minor corrections like changing _ to a blank i do by hand. Similar match expressions work for the other entries.

Well, yes, but that's not cut and paste. That's what I'm doing now and was was hoping to avoid:-) Hallvard Furuseth 05:07, 13 December 2006 (EST)

I have written a simple Windows program for the above conversion. Contact me directly and i send it to you. Robert Marquardt 07:06, 13 December 2006 (EST)

Website Translations

As some of you might have noticed there's already a non-English in progress version of the website. These are the rules I've used for my Portuguese translation:

Don't know if this was the "right" or the "wrong" way--that was just the only way I've figured out of separating both types of content while making all the info available for those who can't unfortunately understand the original FAQ's.
Just thought this message could be useful for any other crazy person like me who may start translating docs for their own native languages, which I'd personally enjoy a lot to see.

Creating a Bookshelf for Reading Comprehension Practice

I am hopeful that the Project Gutenberg community can offer me some suggestions towards making this site useful for premedical students preparing for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), the admissions test for United States Medical School. The MCAT has four sections, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Verbal Reasoning and Essay composition.

I have created a free review course for the MCAT, which I am making available online. To help students prepare for the Verbal Reasoning and Essay sections of the MCAT, in this learning program, I encourage students to develop a Reading Life. I recommend certain periodicals and books, but those generally cost money. I hope that Project Gutenberg can provide some ideas for free alternatives to recommend to premedical students.

In summary, I would like to be able to present a list of works from Project Gutenberg which could be useful for students preparing for a difficult Reading Comprehension exam. In fact, these suggestions could be applicable to GRE or LSAT as well. I hope there might be suggestions for interesting works, which could stimulate forum discussion, and which would challenge students to improve their reading comprehension skills. I am building a list of challenging, dense, varied interesting works.

On a related note, if anyone has compiled a list of Books by Doctors, I would be very interested in seeing such a list. I am encouraging students to read Chekhov, Williams, etc.

Finally, I welcome any suggestions on the mechanics of presentation and design for this type of project. It might be best to begin by simply creating a Bookshelf here at Project Gutenberg and linking to it, if it would be welcome. My own site is driven by advanced PHP so there are many capabilities for presentation.

I am thankful in advance for any suggestions.

MediaWiki extensions

Lets hunt for interesting MediaWiki extensions to customize the wiki. I am for example interested in extensions improving the category and subcategory layout and navigation. Robert Marquardt 02:16, 14 April 2007 (EDT)

Image upload broken

Image uploads somehow stopped working. I'll try to fix the problem with an upgrade to the newest mediawiki version. It's a long weekend here in Germany so don't expect this to happen before the middle of next week. Marcello 14:12, 25 May 2007 (EDT)

Please plunder and delete

I have created Gutenberg:Wiki some months ago for the mainpagesandbox. Robert Marquardt 12:32, 23 July 2007 (EDT)

Reporting content bugs on PG?

Is there a place on this Wiki to report PG content bugs? E.g., PG has an "John Morris" as an author, but this is really the pen name of "John M. Bachelor", who is also a PG author. -Arch dude 18:33, 15 September 2007 (EDT)
