Free Kindle Books Scams Warning

If you google for free kindle books you'll find lots of sites that claim to offer free kindle books. Most of these sites are not genuine. They ask you for an up front fee and give you nothing in return that you couldn't have found elsewhere for free.

What a scam site might do

• Ask for a one time registration fee and then refer you to a genuine free books site. You may end up paying $49 for a link to the Project Gutenberg site.
• Make you participate in online games and promotions, earning money for the site and then refer you to a genuine free books site.
• Sell your credit card number to criminals.

How to recognize a scam site

A scam site:

• Will claim to give you current best-sellers for free.
• Will ask for an up front payment before allowing you to download `free´ books.
• Will ask you to participate in promotions or games.
• Will ask you for your credit card number even if you want to download a `free´ book.

Furthermore

• if you google the site name you find lots of rave reviews of nearly identical wording.
• especially if those reviews seem concerned to explain that the site is not a scam.

Lots of people earn their money by writing rave reviews for so-called `affiliate´ programs. If it sounds too good, it probably is a scam. Also, nobody can give away best-sellers for free.

How to recognize a genuine site

A genuine site:

• Never asks you for money if you want to download a free book.
• Does not have "premium accounts" or other hidden corners.
• Does not ask you to participate in promotions or games.

Why Can Project Gutenberg Offer Kindle Books For Free?

The books we offer fall into one of two categories:

• books that were published before 1923, and thus their copyright has expired,
• books by authors that choose to give away some of their work for promotion.

Project Gutenberg is run by volunteers and gets free hosting from ibiblio. That is why we can offer free kindle books.
