Les chansonnettes sont des fleurs
Qui fleurissent au ciel de France:
L'une a la légère lueur
Des anémones de Provence;
L'autre des tulipes du Nord
A la lumière un peu rouillée,
Et l'autre est une rose au bord
D'une grande forêt mouillée.
L'une est pâle comme l'amour,
L'autre est presque une étoile blanche;
Il y en a pour tous les jours,
Il y en a pour les dimanches;
Qu'elles entrent dans la maison
Ou sortent de la maisonnette,
Les chansons et les chansonnettes
Sont des fleurs des quatre saisons.
Des fleurs, tout comme la jonquille,
La giroflée et le muguet,
Puisqu'on en met de gros bouquets
Dans les bras des petites filles,
Et puisque, dans tous les jardins
Et sur tous les gazons du monde,
On en fait, en nouant des mains,
Des couronnes qui sont des rondes.
Les chansonnettes sont des fleurs
Qu'on cueille, avec des doigts agiles,
Non dans le parc de Tintagiles
Ni sous le cloître d'Elseneur,
Mais sûrement autour des marbres
De nos vieux parterres français,
Et peut-être au pied du grand arbre
Où grimpa le Petit-Poucet!
Les chansonnettes dont s'enivre
Le vent parmi des cheveux blonds
Sont des fleurs pensives que l'on
Peut mettre à sécher dans des livres;
Et souvent, après des années,
On retrouve entre deux feuillets
Une rose?... Non!... Un œillet?...
Non!... mais une chanson fanée!
Les chansonnettes sont des fleurs
Que toutes nous avons cueillies
Lorsqu'on laissait dans les prairies
Batifoler nos jeunes cœurs;
Et, la plus "gardeuse de chèvres"
Comme la plus "fille de rois",
Toutes nous avons, de nos lèvres.
Juré de n'aller plus au bois.
Toutes, sous l'ombre des grands chênes,
Voire sous le grand soleil, nous
Avons chanté la Marjolaine
Et nous avons planté des choux;
Et, parmi les herbes en huppes
Comme sur le trèfle râpé,
Nous avons parfumé nos jupes
Du parfum des lauriers coupés.
Les chansonnettes que l'on chante
Du temps que l'on avait sept ans
Sont de chères plantes grimpantes
Qui vont plus haut que le Printemps;
Quand par hasard elles s'échappent,
Rien ne peut plus les retenir:
Elles montent, de grappe en grappe,
Jusqu'au toit bleu du souvenir.
Double bémol et triple croche,
Elles montent, sans avoir l'air;
D'un brin de feuille elles s'accrochent
Au coin d'un petit volet vert;
L'une a des cheveux de glycine
Et l'autre la gueule d'un loup;
D'autres dansent la capucine...
Toutes tremblent autour de nous.
Les chansonnettes merveilleuses
Qu'on chantait du temps qu'on a peur
De dormir la nuit sans veilleuse
Sont de miraculeuses fleurs,
Des fleurs qu'il est toujours d'usage,
Quand leur éclat s'est effacé,
De porter non sur un corsage,
Mais sur le voile du Passé!
Ce sont elles les fleurs touchantes
De nos beaux jardins d'autrefois;
On les sait sur le bout des doigts,
Puis du fond de l'âme on les chante.
Un sourire... deux mots... trois pleurs...
Et voici que l'on se rappelle...
Les chansonnettes sont des fleurs
Puisque nous nous penchons sur elles!
