NOVA SENTO.

Sonorilludo.

Vespere, en la kora, dolora monotono,
Subite, jen, eksonas la sonorila sono
Kun frapo ĝemanta,
Kun voĉo tremanta.
La batoj ekbruas, fenestron ekskuas
Kaj milde ekfluas muĝado la sorĉa.
Ho, son’ sonorila, vi tondrosimila
Kaj tamen trankvila, ravanta kaj dolĉa!
Doloro en koro sveninte dronanta
Sufokas. Mi vokas al bronzo sonanta:
Ho svingu la langon
Vi tondre batanta!
Ho, plend’ via granda
Traringu la landon!
Ho plendu la fonton
De l’ sango riproĉo!
Ho, tondru la voĉo,
Ke fendu la monton!
Estingu flamlangon
De l’ sent’ malamanta,
De l’ blinde flamanta
Volinta la sangon.
Atingu la kanto
La koran profundon
Por vindi la vundon
Sangintan pro vanto.
Ho sorĉu la senton
Indulge lulante,
Kaj larmojn rulante
Eksolvu la penton!
Ho ringo de kantoj!
Vi fondu la rondon:
Vi fandu la mondon
En rond’ de amantoj!
Kor’ brulas, voĉ’ lulas, min levas, mallevas,
Kaj kaptas min denove dolora monotono...

Ni laŭdu lin...

—je memortago pri morto de nia Majstro.—

Memora fest’ ... dolora fest’!
Funebre ni solenas.
Ho flugis for la flam’ de l’ kor’,
Ni kiun larme benas.
Nek tondra son’ nun de kanon’,
Nek sonoriloj festas,
Nur batsonor’ de nia kor’
Pri la solen’ atestas.
En vasta mond’ malgranda rond’
Ja estas nur la fratoj,
Sed kun potenc’, majesta senc’
Kuniĝas korobatoj.
Ho kunsonor’ de nia kor’
Funebru la benatan,
De kies am’ flagranta flam’
Kunfandis rondon fratan.
Estingis sin la flam’ de l’ sin’
Plu ĝia varm’ ne hardas,
Sed staras jam fandaĵ’ de l’ am’
Kaj spite frostoj—ardas.
Ĝin flegu ni, ardegu ĝi,
Ĝis el malgranda sfero
Post vintra frost’ la Pentekost’
Alvenos al la tero.
Ĝis kun ĝojbril’ flamlangoj mil
Tra l’ tuta mond’ disflugas
Ĝis falas, jen, la peza ĉen’,
Nun kiu langojn jugas.
Ĝis en kompren’, eterna ben’
Fratiĝos mondo tuta...
Ni laŭdu Lin, ke aŭdu nin
Homaro surdemuta.

Pri nia kor’...

Ni estu fieraj, fratoj
Pri nia kor’,
Pri ĝiaj doloraj batoj!
Ĉar estas la bat’ dolora
En nia kor’
Pro tuta la mond’ senkora.
Nin mok’ kaj malam’ rigardas;
Sed nia kor’
Nur amon rebrilas, ardas.
En vintro de l’ tempo nuna
Jen nia kor’!
Ĝi estas la brilo suna.
Frostiĝas nun sent’ kaj larmo...
Sun’: nia kor’

—1919.—

Nun pri armil’ kaj viro, pri paca batalanto
„Ho, mia kor’!“ li kantis, ĉar kaptis lin doloro:
Pro tuta mond’ doloris la granda nobla koro,
Por sangverŝanta mondo ĝi sangverŝante batis.
Kaj kun doloro fajra ĝi amis kaj kompatis.
Vir’ milda kaj modesta, sed forta kaj decida,
Ĉu nin do turmentados eterne la malbeno,
Ke genton de la gento forbaras malkompreno,
Ke al aligentanoj la lango estas muta
Kaj, se parolas, sonas nur blasfemad’ balbuta?
Ĉu do ankoraŭ longe la hont’ terura restas,
Kaj volas mi, ke ĝia art’, manier’, kulturo
Kunbrilu en la pompo de l’ paca mondkonkuro;
Ho mian sekan gorĝon kunpremas jam sufoko,
Detruas en animo terura kataklismo:
Amata mia lando baraktas en abismo!
Ho, super ĝia kapo glav’ Damoklesa pendas,

Hele flamantaj festaj fajrofloroj!
Ĝemas mizere, en mallum’ dronante
Tuta homaro sub malbona sorĉ’,
Brilu al ili ĉie, lumdonante,
Koro flamanta, kiel gvida torĉ’.
Supren la korojn samideana rond’!
Montru ni ilin al disonanca mond’!
Ĉar en niaj koroj estas fundament’
De la pac’, de l’ ben’, de l’ sankta, nova sent’.
Ho kavaliroj de la Pentekost’!
Lukti ni devos en bataloj multaj:
Jen malamikoj: la anima frost’,
Blinda malam’ kaj malkomprenoj stultaj.
Veoj alarmas por batal’ benata,
Grandaj mizeroj vokas nin por arm’.
Jen la armiloj: la laboro frata,
Brak’ brakumanta kaj la kora varm’.
Supren la korojn, samideana rond’!
Montru ni ilin al disonanca mond’!
Ĉar en niaj koroj estas fundament’
De la pac’, de l’ ben’, de l’ sankta, nova sent’.

MONDO KAJ KORO.

Poploj en aleo.

... Poploj staras en aleo...
Ekiras vent’ kun laŭta veo.
Ŝirita, trema ĝemospiro.
Jen: venta kanto pri l’ sopiro.
Kaj dum la vento vee blovas,
La poploj treme sin ekmovas.
L’ unua klini sin komencas,
Ĝi al la dua riverencas,
Sed ĝi al tiu vane zumas,
La trian tiu amindumas.
La tria flustras al la kvara
Kun ama tremo foliara,
Kaj tiel plu ... jen lud’ sencela
Kaj malfeliĉa kaj kruela
Kaj en la tuta vic’ la sama:
Rifuz’ de am’, petego ama...
Sovaĝe hurlas jam la vento:
Sopir’, sopir’, sopir’, turmento...

Kaj lipon havi, sensoifan,
Avare ŝpari je la larmo
Rezigni pri ja vana lukto,
(feliĉon ankaŭ venk’ ne portos),
Rezigni pri la amvolupto
Sciante, ke en naŭz’ ĝi mortos.
Ne lasi plu, ke min ektentu
Am’ de virino, de amiko.
(Brilegaj aĵoj, sed, atentu!,
Dissaltos, kiel sapveziko.)
Kaj se espero ŝajnus, rava,
Ne kapti ĝin per mano trema,
Ĉar ĝi ne estas ŝnuro sava,
Araneaĵ’ nur, ŝiriĝema.
Kaj iri nur, sen cel’, sed fido,
Sen idealoj, sen deziro,
Sur vangoj, sen la ŝmink’ de rido,
Kaj pri la mort’: kun ŝultrektiro...
Kun frostaj vangoj, frosta sento
Ekfali sur la bulon teran,
Kaj kun la vekrianta vento,
Ekkanti kanton malesperan...

Iras abiturient’...

En splena sent’, ĉagrena sent’
Jen koron ekkaresis
Arĝentsonor’ de l’ rememor’
Pri l’ tempoj, kiuj ĉesis.
Ĝojriĉa temp’, feliĉa temp’
De l’ knab’ facilanima,
Ho vivabund’ en kora fund’:
Viv’ estas ja senlima...!
Senpena sort’ kaj plena fort’,
Amika rondo varma,
Kortuŝa fid’, plenbuŝa rid’
Pri ia farso ĉarma.
Ho ora viv’, ĝojflora viv’,
Flugiloj ĝoj-frapantaj,
Malĝoj’ kaj dub’: facila nub’...
Projektoj dolĉe vantaj,
Studenta temp’, ho venta temp’:
Aĝ’ de l’ printempa vento!
Ag’ de April’: en blanka bril’
Burĝonas knabo sento.
Naiva am’: soifa jam
Je kis’ la lipo estas
Kaj la admir’ per fabla mir’
La amatinon vestas.
Naiva poz’: do, sen ripoz’,
Nur supren sur deklivo!
Infana sonĝ’, ho, vana sonĝ’,
Ĉar vekas zorg’ de l’ vivo...
Reportu brilon al la malĝojanto
Malnova, kara kant’, adiaŭkanto:
Iras abiturient’
Jam for...
Adiaŭ, ĉiu kunstudent’...!
Jam for...
La voj’ al hejm’ jen antaŭ mi,
Filistro estos ankaŭ mi.
Jam for... jam for...
Ni kisu nin je lasta foj’.
Infana sonĝ’, ho vana sonĝ’,
Ĉar vekas zorg’ de l’ vivo.
Kaj svenas ĝoj’ kaj venas voj’
Malsupren sur deklivo.
En truda dev’ la fluga rev’,
La sonĝa mond’ ekpalas,
Flugila sving’ sen cel-ating’
Lamiĝas—kaj ni falas.
Nenie sav’... Nek ama rav’
Nin helpas por leviĝo.
Ĉar ĝenas nin, ke venas fin’:
Aŭ tromp’ aŭ senreviĝo.
Amika rond’... Ĝin portas ond’
Malpura: lukt’ por vivo.
Malam’, malpac’, barakt’ kaj lac’
Envio, monsoifo.
Kaj post esper’ la malprosper’
Eterna kaj rigida
Splenigas nin, plenigas nin
Per saĝo tre acida:
Por kio lukt’: acida frukt’
Ja estas la espero
Kaj ĝi de sur branĉ’ sen matur’,
Defalas al la tero.
Do lasu nur: viv’ pasu nur,
Ĉar estas ver’ ordona,
Ke estas mond’ kaj restas mond’
Malĝoja kaj malbona.
Ho ploru, ploru kun la ekploranto
Malnova, kara kant’, adiaŭkanto:
Iras abiturient’
Jam for...
Adiaŭ ĉiu kunstudent’...
Jam for...
La voj’ al hejm’ jen antaŭ mi,
Filistro estos ankaŭ mi.
Jam for... jam for...
Ni kisu nin je lasta foj’...

Se ekbrulus...

El mia, pro l’ sopir’ brulanta kor’
Ardante fluas mia amsufero.
Metal’ rigida el fluanta fero
Obtuza vers’ fandiĝas el dolor’.
Jen kanto, kvazaŭ sonorilsonor’
Funebron soniganta tra l’ aero,
Jen kant’ sovaĝa, kant’ de l’ malespero:
Nenie bril’, nenie helkolor’.
Ho, se ekbrulus en vi ama flamo
Kaj koron de l’ eterne vin amant’
Karesus vi per via vera amo.
Ho kara, tiam estus mia kant’
El ĝoja or’ farita brilornamo
Por via kap’, kun pompa diamant’.

Brulpereo.

Am’, artfajraĵo milkolora!
El kor’ ekflagras vi subite.
Mi ekbruligis vin. Ravite
Mi ĝojis pri fajrejoj viaj.
Espersteletoj verdradiaj
Brilante tra l’ animo lumis
Kaj karesante milde zumis
Pri l’ feliĉego alvenonta.
Kaj el la koro fajrofonta
Flagradis flamo bluehela:
Revado pri plezur’ ĉiela:
Pri lip-sur-lip’, kaj kor-ĉe-koro.
Ho, pluv’ arĝenta, pluv’ el oro,
Ho, dolĉaj flamoj rozkoloraj,
Ho, dolĉaj sentoj fajrofloraj
De laŭstudenta am’ naiva...
Sed ruĝo de l’ sopir’ soifa
Raketis, falis sur la koron.
Mi sentis akran bruldoloron,
Mi tamen ludis plu kuraĝe.
Kaj nun malhele kaj sovaĝe
Leviĝis en violkoloro
La pezaj flamoj de l’ doloro...
Ektremis mi ĉe l’ ekrigardo.
Kaj venis kun bruliga ardo!
Purpur’ terura de l’ pasio
Galopas fajro jam tra ĉio...
Mi time miras ĝian svingon.
Mi krius jam, ho ve, estingon!
Brulvundoj veas sur animo.
Kaj kreskas jen la brul’ sen limo,
Jam kri’ por helpo vane sonas.
Stertore mi en flamoj dronas,
Sangnuboj antaŭ la okuloj...
Ve, mi pereas en la bruloj
De l’ artfajraĵo milkolora.

Ŝiritaj strofoj.

Memoro, mola lito muska!
Min kial la sopir’ embuska
Forpelas de vi ĉiam...
Ĝemspiron ĵetas la sopiro
Kaj refalinta ĝemospiro
Ekbatas koron ŝtone.
Se brakojn mi al nokt’ etendas,
Se savan voĉon mi atendas,
Neniam venas voko.
La lum’ de l’ sonĝoj iĝas blinda,
La blu’ de l’ sonĝoj—paliĝinta
Malplen’ kaj nigro ĉie.
Kaj mi sveninte, pale kuŝas
Kaj mian lacan koron tuŝas
Per brulostampo la dolor’...

Silente, nigre...

Brilanta penso kaj brilanta far’
Jam vane lumus tra la nuba bar’,
Ventege vane vipus vin turmento.
Neatingebla estas por dezir’;
Kuŝante jam feliĉe en haveno,
Ve, en la brakoj de alia vir’
Kun senkonscia arda ĉirkaŭpreno.

Kiel la infano...

Ho vivo, min lacigis via vojo.
Suferon veran
Jes, vivo, min lacigis via vojo
Korpuŝon veran
Jam donas al mi nek malĝoj’, nek ĝojo.
Mi estas pri vi, kiel la infano
Pri la ludilo.
Li ĝin enuas, ĵetus for el mano,
Li ĵetus for, kaj tamen, se ĝin oni
Forpreni volas,
Li ploras, veas kaj ne volas doni.

En memorlibron de knabino.

Kvieta, dolĉa estu via viv’
Kaj gaja, kiel ludo de infanoj
Dancantaj vigle, manoj en la manoj
Je maj-maten’ sur suna montdekliv’.
Se venas ankaŭ iom da dolor’
Ĝi estu, kiel siluet’ de mano,
Se ombroludon ludas la infano:
Facila, farsa, flirtu baldaŭ for.
Deziroj, kiel ŝafidetoj, ĉie
Vagadu vigle, pro l’ odor’ ebrie
Sur verdaj kampoj inter florornamo,
Ĝis fine ilin kun vipanta pelo
Direktos al la ununura celo
Paŝtist’ sovaĝa: la unua amo.

Knabino en fenestro.

Florante vi en la fenestro sidas,
La strattumulton vi mirante vidas,
Kompato dolĉa tuŝas min ĉe koro:
Sort’ via estas, kiel sort’ de floro.
Etendas sin jam manoj florŝirantaj,
Viajn petalojn havi dezirantaj,
Sed ho ne ties, kiun vi salutus
Per klin’, kaj lipojn per miel’ vi ŝutus.
Okul’ ekbrilos, koro ekfrapetos,
Se venos, kaj la ŝnurŝtuparon ĵetos
De la esper’ naskita sonĝo-vir’
El sonĝoj alvenanta kavalir’—
Aŭ koron, vangojn, dum atendo vana
Enmaskos tempo, la kruelemana
Per frosta krusto kaj per velkosign’.
Kaj vi fenestron fermos kun rezign’.

Am’ ne estas...

Ho, am’ ne estas ludo,
Sed forta sorta trudo.
Ĝi svingas sian vipon
Al lip’ pelante lipon.
Ni timas ĝian baton,
Kapricon, senkompaton,
Sub ĝia jug’ ni svenas...
Kaj tamen ĝin ni benas.

Ribeleto.

Ho, kiom da bataloj en la mondo!
Egale estas, kio ajn min gvidus,
Nur foje jam min mi batali vidus.
Ĉu do ne estas, kiel ĉiu homo,
Knedita mi el karno kaj sopiro,
Ke sidas mi inerte, kun ĝemspiro?
Ĉu do utilas, ĉu al iu plaĉas,
Ke jen, mi estas bona, kiel pano,
Kaj mi sekiĝas, aŭ min mus’ formaĉas...

Feina sorto.

Feino vivis en la lag’
Kun viv’ soleca kaj kvieta
Kaj al la bord’ je unu tag’
Alvenis juna vir’ poeta.
Kaj bela estis la junul’
Kaj bukla lia brunhararo,
Ardante brilis sorĉa brul’
En lia nigra okulparo.
Ekvidis ŝin la juna vir’,
Ekflamis lia kor’ amema,
Li kantis kanton pri l’ sopir’
Kaj vokis ŝin per voĉo trema.
Solecon frostan de l’ fein’
Neniam tuŝis voĉo tia,
Ensorĉis por eterne ŝin
La okulparo flamradia.
Kaj plenumiĝis ŝia sort’,
Tra l’ koro boris amo-sago
Tirate de ravanta fort’
Sen vol’ ŝi venis el la lago.
Iliajn lipojn ama brul’
Kunfandis. Vane vokis ondo.
Ŝi, man’ en mano kun junul’,
Ekiris al mortema mondo.
Kaj estis por eterne for’
Fedigno virgulina, sorĉa,
Ŝi donis ĝin plezure por
La ravo de la amo dolĉa.
Kaj ne ekfloris plu narcis’
Se lipojn ŝi por rid’ malfermis,
Ne milda flor’, sed fajra kis’
Sur ŝiaj ruĝaj lipoj ĝermis.
Kaj se ekkaptis ŝin dolor’,
L’ okuloj plu ne perlojn rulis.
Sed vera, homa, sala plor’,
Varmega larm’ en ili brulis.
Kaj ĉiam pli kaj pli da larm’
Elgutis al ŝi el okulo,
Ĉar, ve, ekvelkis ŝia ĉarm’,
Kaj ŝin forlasis la junulo.

*

Feinoj, estas la destin’
Por vi kruela kaj malbrila.
La sort’ elekti trudas vin,
Elekto estas malfacila:
Fevivon frostan vivi sur
La koro kun glacia krusto,
Aŭ en pasema amplezur’
Ekvelki sur la vira brusto.

Aglo kaj kolombo.

Rideto, jen, sur mia vang’ ekfloris
Hodiaŭ, pale strange kaj kun tim’.
Dum nova movo pro la malkutim’
Vizaĝo mia kvazaŭ ekdoloris.
Pro l’ mond’ malica ĝemis mi kaj ploris,
Ĉar ho, plorinda estas ĝi sen lim’;
Dolor’ kruela sidis sur anim’
Kaj kiel aglo, ungojn ĝi enboris.
Sed kun esper’ ravanta nun mi ridas,
Ĉar jen, kolombon dolĉan nun mi vidas,
Mi vidas nun, virino kara, vin.
Kaj certe mi atendas la miraklon,
Ke venos, venos de l’ doloro fin’:
Ke la kolombo venkos nun la aglon.

Printempa sorĉo.

Flirtanta eta papili’
Flugadas super kampa vojo.
Ho, en lazur’ flugpendu nur!
Mi nun forgesas pri l’ malĝojo
Kaj tuta la flugila polv’
Pentrinta mian infanmanon
Surpluvas min, kaj al la sin’
Ĝi portas post doloro sanon.
Kun kis’ tumultas al la kor’
De l’ infanaĝo mil memoroj,
Nenie pent’, malĝoja sent’,
Kruela aro de l’ doloroj.
Mi serĉas: kien estas for
Amdorn’: malnova dolorilo...?
Jen, en la kor’ arĝentsonor’:
Ĝojŝafidet’ kun sonorilo.
Ho ora sun’, ho silkĉiel’!
Facila nub’ el purarĝento!
Printemp’ sen lim’! El la anim’
Rifuĝas ĉia splena sento.
La kamp’, sonanta ondfein’,
Ornamis buklojn nun per floroj
Ŝi kantas jen, sin banas en
Rivero dolĉa de l’ odoroj.
Ho, kia tril’ de l’ birda ar’!
Sur arboj dolĉa floro-ĉarmo!
Kun laŭta ĝem’ ĉu do mi mem
Min lavis per maldolĉa larmo?
Ho, vi mensogis al mi, kor’,
Ke estas tuta viv’ sufera,
Ĝojkriu nun, eksciu nun
Ke estis via vort’ malvera.
Plezuro kia estas nun
Doloron per kalkano jugi!
Ho, kia ĝu’: sub brila blu’
Sur kamp’ ekkuri... suprenflugi...

Printempo.

Somero.

Ĝis limoj de l’ vido ondadas tritikoj.
Jen flava mareg’ sub ardanta sunbrilo...
Sub propra la ŝarĝo jam antaŭ falĉilo
La kapojn ekklinas humile la spikoj.
Virino benata, la Tero Patrino
Infanojn alvokas: do venu, ho homoj,
Infanoj avidaj, do venu al sino.
Kaj ili alvenas, kaj venas ne vane,
Kaj falas la beno abunde, sen fino
Patrino amanta ĝin ŝutas plenmane.
Sopir’ min ekkaptas: per pia kapklino
L’ adoron ekmontri kaj fali infane
Sur bruston benatan de l’ Tero-Patrino.

Aŭtuno.

En flava arbaro aŭtuna mi kuŝas...
Faladas zigzage kaj zumas folioj,

Ĝi kisi ne plu, jam karesi nur povas:
Amanto fidela jam iĝis maljuna.
Karesas li, fine kvieton ŝi trovas.
Kaj ĉion ekregas silento aŭtuna...
Nur foje folion la vento ekmovas.

Updated editions will replace the previous one--the old editions
will be renamed.

Creating the works from public domain print editions means that no
one owns a United States copyright in these works, so the Foundation
(and you!) can copy and distribute it in the United States without
permission and without paying copyright royalties. Special rules,
set forth in the General Terms of Use part of this license, apply to
copying and distributing Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works to
protect the PROJECT GUTENBERG-tm concept and trademark. Project
Gutenberg is a registered trademark, and may not be used if you
charge for the eBooks, unless you receive specific permission. If you
do not charge anything for copies of this eBook, complying with the
rules is very easy. You may use this eBook for nearly any purpose
such as creation of derivative works, reports, performances and
research. They may be modified and printed and given away--you may do
practically ANYTHING with public domain eBooks. Redistribution is
subject to the trademark license, especially commercial
redistribution.

*** START: FULL LICENSE ***

THE FULL PROJECT GUTENBERG LICENSE
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU DISTRIBUTE OR USE THIS WORK

To protect the Project Gutenberg-tm mission of promoting the free
distribution of electronic works, by using or distributing this work
(or any other work associated in any way with the phrase "Project
Gutenberg"), you agree to comply with all the terms of the Full Project
Gutenberg-tm License available with this file or online at
  www.gutenberg.org/license.

Section 1. General Terms of Use and Redistributing Project Gutenberg-tm
electronic works

1.A. By reading or using any part of this Project Gutenberg-tm
electronic work, you indicate that you have read, understand, agree to
and accept all the terms of this license and intellectual property
(trademark/copyright) agreement. If you do not agree to abide by all
the terms of this agreement, you must cease using and return or destroy
all copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in your possession.
If you paid a fee for obtaining a copy of or access to a Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic work and you do not agree to be bound by the
terms of this agreement, you may obtain a refund from the person or
entity to whom you paid the fee as set forth in paragraph 1.E.8.

1.B. "Project Gutenberg" is a registered trademark. It may only be
used on or associated in any way with an electronic work by people who
agree to be bound by the terms of this agreement. There are a few
things that you can do with most Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works
even without complying with the full terms of this agreement. See
paragraph 1.C below. There are a lot of things you can do with Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic works if you follow the terms of this agreement
and help preserve free future access to Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works. See paragraph 1.E below.

1.C. The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation ("the Foundation"
or PGLAF), owns a compilation copyright in the collection of Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic works. Nearly all the individual works in the
collection are in the public domain in the United States. If an
individual work is in the public domain in the United States and you are
located in the United States, we do not claim a right to prevent you from
copying, distributing, performing, displaying or creating derivative
works based on the work as long as all references to Project Gutenberg
are removed. Of course, we hope that you will support the Project
Gutenberg-tm mission of promoting free access to electronic works by
freely sharing Project Gutenberg-tm works in compliance with the terms of
this agreement for keeping the Project Gutenberg-tm name associated with
the work. You can easily comply with the terms of this agreement by
keeping this work in the same format with its attached full Project
Gutenberg-tm License when you share it without charge with others.

1.D. The copyright laws of the place where you are located also govern
what you can do with this work. Copyright laws in most countries are in
a constant state of change. If you are outside the United States, check
the laws of your country in addition to the terms of this agreement
before downloading, copying, displaying, performing, distributing or
creating derivative works based on this work or any other Project
Gutenberg-tm work. The Foundation makes no representations concerning
the copyright status of any work in any country outside the United
States.

1.E. Unless you have removed all references to Project Gutenberg:

1.E.1. The following sentence, with active links to, or other immediate
access to, the full Project Gutenberg-tm License must appear prominently
whenever any copy of a Project Gutenberg-tm work (any work on which the
phrase "Project Gutenberg" appears, or with which the phrase "Project
Gutenberg" is associated) is accessed, displayed, performed, viewed,
copied or distributed:

This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with
almost no restrictions whatsoever. You may copy it, give it away or
re-use it under the terms of the Project Gutenberg License included
with this eBook or online at www.gutenberg.org

1.E.2. If an individual Project Gutenberg-tm electronic work is derived
from the public domain (does not contain a notice indicating that it is
posted with permission of the copyright holder), the work can be copied
and distributed to anyone in the United States without paying any fees
or charges. If you are redistributing or providing access to a work
with the phrase "Project Gutenberg" associated with or appearing on the
work, you must comply either with the requirements of paragraphs 1.E.1
through 1.E.7 or obtain permission for the use of the work and the
Project Gutenberg-tm trademark as set forth in paragraphs 1.E.8 or
1.E.9.

1.E.3. If an individual Project Gutenberg-tm electronic work is posted
with the permission of the copyright holder, your use and distribution
must comply with both paragraphs 1.E.1 through 1.E.7 and any additional
terms imposed by the copyright holder. Additional terms will be linked
to the Project Gutenberg-tm License for all works posted with the
permission of the copyright holder found at the beginning of this work.

1.E.4. Do not unlink or detach or remove the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License terms from this work, or any files containing a part of this
work or any other work associated with Project Gutenberg-tm.

1.E.5. Do not copy, display, perform, distribute or redistribute this
electronic work, or any part of this electronic work, without
prominently displaying the sentence set forth in paragraph 1.E.1 with
active links or immediate access to the full terms of the Project
Gutenberg-tm License.

1.E.6. You may convert to and distribute this work in any binary,
compressed, marked up, nonproprietary or proprietary form, including any
word processing or hypertext form. However, if you provide access to or
distribute copies of a Project Gutenberg-tm work in a format other than
"Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other format used in the official version
posted on the official Project Gutenberg-tm web site (www.gutenberg.org),
you must, at no additional cost, fee or expense to the user, provide a
copy, a means of exporting a copy, or a means of obtaining a copy upon
request, of the work in its original "Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other
form. Any alternate format must include the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License as specified in paragraph 1.E.1.

1.E.7. Do not charge a fee for access to, viewing, displaying,
performing, copying or distributing any Project Gutenberg-tm works
unless you comply with paragraph 1.E.8 or 1.E.9.

1.E.8. You may charge a reasonable fee for copies of or providing
access to or distributing Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works provided
that

- You pay a royalty fee of 20% of the gross profits you derive from
the use of Project Gutenberg-tm works calculated using the method
you already use to calculate your applicable taxes. The fee is
owed to the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark, but he
has agreed to donate royalties under this paragraph to the
Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation. Royalty payments
must be paid within 60 days following each date on which you
prepare (or are legally required to prepare) your periodic tax
returns. Royalty payments should be clearly marked as such and
sent to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation at the
address specified in Section 4, "Information about donations to
the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation."

- You provide a full refund of any money paid by a user who notifies
you in writing (or by e-mail) within 30 days of receipt that s/he
does not agree to the terms of the full Project Gutenberg-tm
License. You must require such a user to return or
destroy all copies of the works possessed in a physical medium
and discontinue all use of and all access to other copies of
     Project Gutenberg-tm works.

- You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of any
money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the
electronic work is discovered and reported to you within 90 days
     of receipt of the work.

- You comply with all other terms of this agreement for free
     distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm works.

1.E.9. If you wish to charge a fee or distribute a Project Gutenberg-tm
electronic work or group of works on different terms than are set
forth in this agreement, you must obtain permission in writing from
both the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and Michael
Hart, the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark. Contact the
Foundation as set forth in Section 3 below.

1.F.

1.F.1. Project Gutenberg volunteers and employees expend considerable
effort to identify, do copyright research on, transcribe and proofread
public domain works in creating the Project Gutenberg-tm
collection. Despite these efforts, Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works, and the medium on which they may be stored, may contain
"Defects," such as, but not limited to, incomplete, inaccurate or
corrupt data, transcription errors, a copyright or other intellectual
property infringement, a defective or damaged disk or other medium, a
computer virus, or computer codes that damage or cannot be read by
your equipment.

1.F.2. LIMITED WARRANTY, DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES - Except for the "Right
of Replacement or Refund" described in paragraph 1.F.3, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the owner of the Project
Gutenberg-tm trademark, and any other party distributing a Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic work under this agreement, disclaim all
liability to you for damages, costs and expenses, including legal
fees. YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO REMEDIES FOR NEGLIGENCE, STRICT
LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY OR BREACH OF CONTRACT EXCEPT THOSE
PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH 1.F.3. YOU AGREE THAT THE FOUNDATION, THE
TRADEMARK OWNER, AND ANY DISTRIBUTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT BE
LIABLE TO YOU FOR ACTUAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES EVEN IF YOU GIVE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
DAMAGE.

1.F.3. LIMITED RIGHT OF REPLACEMENT OR REFUND - If you discover a
defect in this electronic work within 90 days of receiving it, you can
receive a refund of the money (if any) you paid for it by sending a
written explanation to the person you received the work from. If you
received the work on a physical medium, you must return the medium with
your written explanation. The person or entity that provided you with
the defective work may elect to provide a replacement copy in lieu of a
refund. If you received the work electronically, the person or entity
providing it to you may choose to give you a second opportunity to
receive the work electronically in lieu of a refund. If the second copy
is also defective, you may demand a refund in writing without further
opportunities to fix the problem.

1.F.4. Except for the limited right of replacement or refund set forth
in paragraph 1.F.3, this work is provided to you 'AS-IS', WITH NO OTHER
WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.

1.F.5. Some states do not allow disclaimers of certain implied
warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain types of damages.
If any disclaimer or limitation set forth in this agreement violates the
law of the state applicable to this agreement, the agreement shall be
interpreted to make the maximum disclaimer or limitation permitted by
the applicable state law. The invalidity or unenforceability of any
provision of this agreement shall not void the remaining provisions.

1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone
providing copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in accordance
with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the production,
promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works,
harmless from all liability, costs and expenses, including legal fees,
that arise directly or indirectly from any of the following which you do
or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this or any Project Gutenberg-tm
work, (b) alteration, modification, or additions or deletions to any
Project Gutenberg-tm work, and (c) any Defect you cause.

Section 2. Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg-tm

Project Gutenberg-tm is synonymous with the free distribution of
electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of computers
including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers. It exists
because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations from
people in all walks of life.

Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the
assistance they need are critical to reaching Project Gutenberg-tm's
goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg-tm collection will
remain freely available for generations to come. In 2001, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure
and permanent future for Project Gutenberg-tm and future generations.
To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation
and how your efforts and donations can help, see Sections 3 and 4
and the Foundation information page at www.gutenberg.org

Section 3. Information about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive
Foundation

The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation is a non profit
501(c)(3) educational corporation organized under the laws of the
state of Mississippi and granted tax exempt status by the Internal
Revenue Service. The Foundation's EIN or federal tax identification
number is 64-6221541. Contributions to the Project Gutenberg
Literary Archive Foundation are tax deductible to the full extent
permitted by U.S. federal laws and your state's laws.

The Foundation's principal office is located at 4557 Melan Dr. S.
Fairbanks, AK, 99712., but its volunteers and employees are scattered
throughout numerous locations. Its business office is located at 809
North 1500 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84116, (801) 596-1887. Email

Section 4. Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg
Literary Archive Foundation

Project Gutenberg-tm depends upon and cannot survive without wide
spread public support and donations to carry out its mission of
increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be
freely distributed in machine readable form accessible by the widest
array of equipment including outdated equipment. Many small donations
($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt
status with the IRS.

The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating
charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United
States. Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a
considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up
with these requirements. We do not solicit donations in locations
where we have not received written confirmation of compliance. To
SEND DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any
particular state visit www.gutenberg.org/donate

While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we
have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition
against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who
approach us with offers to donate.

International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make
any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from
outside the United States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.

Please check the Project Gutenberg Web pages for current donation
methods and addresses. Donations are accepted in a number of other
ways including checks, online payments and credit card donations.
To donate, please visit: www.gutenberg.org/donate

Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works.

Professor Michael S. Hart was the originator of the Project Gutenberg-tm
concept of a library of electronic works that could be freely shared
with anyone. For forty years, he produced and distributed Project
Gutenberg-tm eBooks with only a loose network of volunteer support.

Project Gutenberg-tm eBooks are often created from several printed
editions, all of which are confirmed as Public Domain in the U.S.
unless a copyright notice is included. Thus, we do not necessarily
keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper edition.

Most people start at our Web site which has the main PG search facility:

     www.gutenberg.org

This Web site includes information about Project Gutenberg-tm,
including how to make donations to the Project Gutenberg Literary
Archive Foundation, how to help produce our new eBooks, and how to
subscribe to our email newsletter to hear about new eBooks.
